| Bulldogs Earn Another Shutout |
|
The Bellingham Bulldogs, a semi-pro football team in the North American Football League, earned a 23-0 win over the West Sound Saints on Saturday, Sept. 12, in Bremerton. Bellingham quarterback Mark Simmons, a Meridian graduate, hit Mathew Nixon for a TD pass with two minutes left in the first half for the first score of the game. Simmons left the game later with a rib injury and Mike Chappelle and Brad Collins split QB duties in the second half. The Saints were held to three yards total offense in the first half. In the second half, the Bulldogs blocked a Saints punt through the back of the end zone, resulting in a safety for Bellingham. Collins led a third-quarter scoring drive, which ended on a 60-yard touchdown by Nick Gavigan (4 catches, 117 yards, TD). In the fourth quarter, Collins connected for a 65-yard TD with Nooksack graduate Jesh Morgan (4 catches for 105 yards). Chase Cantrelle (Meridian/WWU grad) had four tackles and three and a half sacks, Jay Zimmerman had two interceptions and Collins had 180 passing yards and two touchdowns. The Bulldogs, 8-0 and the No. 2 seed in the West if the playoffs were to start now, recorded their fifth shutout of the season. Bellingham is at Portland on Saturday Sept. 19, to take on the Raiders followed by the final regular season home game Sept. 26 at Civic Stadium.
